Obscene

Yep, don’t think there is a book titled that. But; some things are obscene. Of course; as our parents would tell us; Catcher in the Rye is obscene and yet now it’s commonly read in forward thinking High Schools across the nation.

Just Damn Big

Just Damn Big

However; last week there was a boat “Rising Sun” in the harbor that IMHO is obscene. This boat is over a football field long, has a basketball court on the aft deck where someone can land a heliocopter.  They stopped in here paying $2.50 / foot to  dock and took on 110,000 gallons of fuel. Yep; that’s One Hundred and Ten Thousand gallons of fuel. Fueling took approximately 3 days and maybe since they took on that much fuel the dockage was; dare I say it…. Free!

See the little people!

See the little people!

They took on more in fuel then we could most likely pay for even if we sold everything we had and W/ went back to work!  I guess living Green is only for the poor and middle class. Some how it doesn’t strike me as all too grand that Al Gore talks about “saving the planet” and we’ve all seen how green he is!  I guess if you have money then doing things like living green means you can’t be bothered.  This boat or yacht or what have you; has 82 rooms!  My GOD!  I guess there has always been and will always be a group of people that are so far above the masses that it is hard to comprehend. I can’t comprehend having this yacht just to have it and not even live on it!  I can’t comprehend paying the  crew; dockage, haul out, or even filling the fuel tank. And now; instead of being the largest boat in the world it is the 6th largest boat.

Harbor at Night

Harbor at Night

Now  while we’re looking at Rising Sun there are several other obscene boats that moved into the harbor.  Two huge 100′ + sailboats Atlanta and the yacht P. I looked up the yacht Atlanta and it charters for; get this, 160,000 euros / week.  That’s $228,000.00!  Max of it appears to carry is 12 guests. Who the hell has that kind of money to use for one week?  And that’s only $19,000.00 / week for each guest.  Amazing.

Now I know that most likely we’ll be in some countries where our little boat is considered to  be not much different then Rising Sun. So at some point we too will be the envy or scorn of people around us. As I said obscene is all in your perspective. If you’re the 6th largest private yacht in the world and you pull in to a harbor where the other 5 are; you too might feel that Santa left you hangin!

Hope Santa doesnt’ leave you hanging. We’ll be here through Xmas, then we’ll finish fixing the roller furling and find someplace else to hang our heads…. oops; …. I mean hats.
